E-Bike Laws in Australia: What Every Rider Needs to Know in 2025
Electric bikes are more than just a trend in Australia, they’re a movement. Whether you’re cruising the coast, commuting to work, or riding for fitness, e-bikes are reshaping how Aussies move. But with the rise of power-assisted pedalling comes responsibility: knowing the road rules.
Here’s your 2025 guide to staying safe, legal, and confident on a BLITZINbike.
Where You Can Ride
E-bikes fall under similar rules to bicycles, but with a few extra details to keep in mind.
You can ride your e-bike:
- On roads, shared paths, and bike lanes
- On footpaths (in QLD for all ages; in NSW only if under 16 or riding with supervision)
You cannot ride your e-bike:
- On roads with speed limits above 50 km/h unless there’s a marked bike lane
- On motorways, highways, or other restricted roads
Rules differ slightly by state and territory. Always check your local government guidelines before you ride.
Staying Street Legal: The 25km/h Limit
Under Australian law, road-legal e-bikes must have a maximum assisted speed of 25 km/h. Go faster than that under motor power, and you’re no longer classed as a bicycle.
That’s why every BLITZINbike is fitted with a limiter switch, capping your e-bike’s motor assistance to the legal limit, keeping your ride compliant and stress-free. You’ll still enjoy the power of pedal-assist, but with the confidence that you’re riding within the law.
Key Road Safety Tips for E-Bike Riders
E-bikes are heavier and faster than traditional push bikes, which means safety is even more important. Here are the essentials:
- Helmet On, always. It’s the law, and your best protection.
- Make Yourself Visible
- White front light + red rear light
- Reflectors on pedals, wheels, and rear
- Bright or reflective gear at dawn, dusk, or night
- Signal Clearly. Use hand signals when turning or stopping, predictability keeps everyone safe.
- Ride Defensively
- Don’t assume drivers see you
- Stay out of blind spots
- Watch for car doors opening into bike lanes
- Obey the Rules, even though you don’t need a license, you’re subject to the same laws as cars:
- Stop at red lights and stop signs
- Give way at crossings
- Don’t ride under the influence
- Don’t use your phone while riding
- Stick Left & Single File. When riding with mates, stay left and ride in single file on the road.
A quick pre-ride check can prevent big issues:
- Test brakes for responsiveness
- Check tyres for air and tread
- Secure your battery firmly
- Confirm lights and reflectors work
- Bell or horn ready to go
Riding in Wet or Low-Light Conditions
Australia’s weather can turn quickly. If you’re caught in rain or fading light:
- Slow down and brake gently
- Avoid slippery metal surfaces (drains, tram tracks)
- Wear extra reflective gear
- Double-check lights before heading out
Common Road Hazards for E-Bikes
Keep your eyes peeled for:
- Potholes and cracks
- Loose gravel or sand on corners
- Tram or train tracks (cross at a right angle)
Respect for All Road Users
Riding with respect makes everyone’s journey better:
- Use your bell early when passing walkers
- Give at least 1 metre clearance when overtaking
- Don’t weave between cars, wait in line and stay visible
